Pondicherry Engineering College was established in the year 1984 under the seventh Five Year Plan with liberal seed grant from MHRD, Government of India. The institution is fully funded by the Government of Puducherry. It is autonomous for both administrative and academic purposes. The sprawling 210 acres beautiful campus of the institute equipped with the best of breed infrastructure provides an excellent environment to the students and scholars towards pursuing their academic education and research. The institute offers 8 undergraduate, 11 post graduate and Ph.D programmes in all major disciplines of Engineering and Technology. Currently, around 400 scholars are pursuing Ph.D. in various disciplines in the campus. The institute believes that the true potentials of students cannot be realized through academics alone. The students need to be provided with opportunities for exploring and enhancing their talents in extra- curricular activities as well. The Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE) was found in the academic year 1985-86. The department is offering an UG course in ECE and PG courses in ECE and Wireless Communication and Ph.D program. Academic year 2013-14 was the silver jubilee year for M.Tech ECE course. The department has a team of highly qualified and dedicated faculty members. The department has laboratories with modern and state-of-the-art equipment, well furnished seminar hall, excellent computing facilities and a library with several volumes of books. The department has produced 36 Ph.Ds and 87 scholars are presently pursuing the doctoral program. The department has been recognized as a minor QIP centre for pursuing Ph.D program. The alumni of our department are spread far and wide across the globe holding eminent positions in Industries, Academia and Civil services.
Pondicherry (or Puducherry), a French colonial settlement in India until 1954, is now a Union Territory town bounded by the south eastern Tamil Nadu state. Claude Elwood Shannon (April 30, 1916 – February 24, 2001) was an American mathematician, Electronic engineer, and Cryptographer known as "The Father of Information Theory". Shannon is famous for having founded information theory with a landmark paper that he published in 1948. He is perhaps equally well known for founding both digital computer and digital circuit design theory in 1937, when, as a 21-year-old master's degree student at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), he wrote his thesis demonstrating that electrical applications of Boolean algebra could construct any logical, numerical relationship. Shannon contributed to the field of cryptanalysis for national defense during World War II, including his basic work on codebreaking and secure telecommunications
